When you are pushing hard to get through a workout, it is important to be able to keep up your energy levels so that you can finish strong. Being able to get through your workouts can have a direct impact on your ability to accomplish your goals quicker.

Did you see what I did in the video that helps me get my insane energy and make it through every workout? If you missed it, the secret is all in using a good BCAA supplement throughout your workout.

Using a high-quality BCAA intra-workout is an excellent way to provide your body with the much-needed energy to complete your training. And the ones we have now are even better than the ones I was using back when we filmed this workout.

We are continually trying to make everything we do better, whether it be the way we live, what we eat and ingest, and the products we provide for you. And that is why we have continued to make our BCAAs better. We liked this workout video because it showcases our old BCAAs and it is fun to take a trip down memory lane.

Our BCAAs were always good, but we knew we could make them better. The old formula, as clean as it was, still had Sucralose and that just wasn’t going to do it for me.

I knew I needed to get that Sucralose out and so we came up with a formula that still tasted great but didn’t require you to consume harmful ingredient. If you haven’t seen our new BCAAs, you need to! Our new formula has no artificial ingredients, flavors or dyes. Plus, it will increase your endurance, stimulate muscle synthesis, and helps you ward off hunger.

10 Tasty Protein Bars You Should Consider

Sometimes we need a quick snack on the go or a little pick-me-up, and many of us turn to protein bars. They can help take the edge off of hunger, stop cravings, and even provide some nutrition.

Plus, they are much healthier than reaching for a Snickers bar.

But, just because you’re grabbing a protein bar or a snack bar that is being marketed as a healthy alternative, doesn’t mean it is right for you and something you should be eating.

We bought a bunch of protein bars that are being sold as healthy snacks, many of which you have most likely seen, if not tried yourself.

Watch the video below as we go over some of the top protein bars that people go for as we pick out which ones have the best ingredients and which ones you should just avoid altogether.

Top Protein Bars You Should Try

Quest Bar

This bar is the one you’ve probably seen the most. Everyone has heard of the Quest Bar. They are everywhere and do an excellent job at marketing their product. And almost everyone in the fitness space has eaten these at one point or another, including me. These are not on my list of favorites but I wanted to explain how we use these in people’s fitness journeys.

In fact, we even put them on our meal plans, but not for the reason you may think.

While this bar is gluten-free and contains less than 1 gram of sugar, as shown right on the front of their package, when you turn it around you find a lot more. Some of the first things you notice, such as Sucralose, can begin to impact the gut when consumed on a regular basis.

We also find soluble corn fiber and palm oil. While these are things that we don’t want to ingest too much of, the reason that we include these on our Custom Meal Plans is because, for someone just coming off eating candy bars, such as Snickers or Twix, this is a much better option and is a step in the right direction. For many, it is much easier going from the processed sweets they are used to eating to a Quest Bar than it is cutting it all out at once and going to straight protein.

Epic & Tanka

The two best bars that you can get are Epic and Tanka. These are immaculate and delicious. However, they are not like your typical protein bar, but rather are more like a large beef stick.

These two bars are made from all natural ingredients and are always my go-to protein bar. Just like when choosing a good protein powder, you want to make sure that your protein bars are 100% natural with few ingredients.

Epic bars offer chicken, turkey, bison, and bacon options, are grass-fed, and contain the perfect amount of fats, protein, and carbs. On the other hand, Tanka bars are made from Buffalo meat and are hormone free, MSG free, gluten free, and nitrate free. They also have a sweet kick as they contain a few raspberries.

Health Warrior, Oatmega & RXBar

After the Epic and Tanka bars, I would say Health Warrior, Omega, and RXBars are your next best options.

These bars are some of the healthier choices compared to the majority that are on the shelves. They are made of natural ingredients, and the only the thing I would say I don’t like about these bars is the sugar they contain.

And if you remember our discussion on sugar, you know that it can have an impact on your goals. So when you are looking at the ingredients to different protein bars or just foods in general, be sure you know what you are looking for and why.

Wilde Boulder, Lenny and Larry’s Cookies & Muscle Brownies

Companies promote these options as healthy alternatives to eating actual cookies and brownies. And I get questions about this all the time.

All you have to do is turn them over and look at the ingredients on the back. These snacks contain so many different ingredients that it would take you a long time just to read them all.

Just because companies market them as a healthier option, doesn’t mean they are. These are cookies and brownies, and I would not recommend consuming these on a regular basis. Once in a while won’t kill you, but know what you are eating before you put it in your body.

Make Your Own Protein Balls!

And my all-time number one favorite is when I make my very own protein balls! This way I know exactly what ingredients are in there, they are easy to take with me, and they are so good! They’re nutrient dense (and about 100 calories per ball!), and they are so filling! Plus, they smash any cravings you may have.

Use this recipe to make your very own protein balls:

  • 2 scoops of Organic Vegan Protein Superfood
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/2 cup almond butter
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1/4 cup dark cacao chips

Combine all of your ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. We suggest using your hands to mix your ingredients well.

Then roll your mixture into 18 balls and store in the fridge until you are ready to eat. Enjoy!

And post filming the video above, I have found a bar I love even more than any of the ones mentioned, and that is Jane Health. These bars are made with organic vegan protein and contain no artificial chemicals or preservatives. And they are sweetened with stevia. Plus, they taste amazing and will satisfy any sweet tooth!

Jane Health is a great option if you don’t have time to make your own bars and simply need something that is quick and easy. These are so tasty and are only found online.

Chocolate Vanilla Protein Truffles [Recipe]

That’s right, we have Organic Vegan Protein Superfood back in stock! So we wanted to make a delicious, gluten-free dessert using both of these flavors.

This chocolate covered vanilla protein truffles are gluten-free and make great snacks! Plus, you can fit them right onto your Custom Meal Plan. These are perfect little snacks to cure your sweet tooth.

Chocolate Vanilla Protein Truffles

½ cup Organic Vegan Protein Superfood (2 scoops)
½ cup Detox Organics
½ cup of gluten-free vanilla cake mix
¼ cup and 1 tsp condensed coconut milk
½ tsp vanilla extract
1 ½ cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips

In a large bowl add all of your ingredients except the chocolate chips and chocolate protein and mix until the ingredients become dough-like. Add 1 tsp of almond milk if your dough remains too crumbly. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.

Remove your dough and form them into small balls. Stick them back in the fridge for another 15 minutes.

In a double boiler melt your semi-sweet chocolate chips. Once melted, add in your chocolate protein and 1 tbsp of almond milk and mix together. To thin out chocolate for easier dipping, add 1 tbsp of almond milk at a time until the consistency is easy to dip in.

Remove your vanilla protein balls after your 15 minutes are up and dip them into your melted chocolate.

Place on parchment paper and place back in the fridge for 15-20 minutes until freezing. Once chilled and the chocolate has hardened, enjoy!

Krill Oil vs Fish Oil: Does It Really Matter?

Fish oil and krill oil may seem like the same supplement with the difference being the price, but studies show there are some significant differences in the effects that each have inside the body. If you have been taking fish oil, but are unsure of the benefits to switching to krill oil, or are debating on taking either, we have broken down some of the remarkable advantages of both and how they stack up against each other in studies. When choosing a supplement, you always want to pick the one that is going be doing the most good for your body, so you don’t waste money on an inferior product.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • Top benefits you will get from taking a krill oil supplement
  • The real difference between fish oil and krill oil

What Kind of Benefits Can I Get From Krill Oil?

One of the most widely known effects of fish and krill oil is the positive impact it can have on hyperlipidemia, otherwise known as high blood pressure [1, 2]. While the more widely used and available fish oil can be used to create the same effect, in a clinical trial krill oil was found to be more efficient in lowering cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL as compared to both the fish oil and the placebo [3].

⚡ Related: Learn How Eggs Can Also Help Control Cholesterol

Lowering bad cholesterol plays a significant role in reducing the risk of heart attack, cardiovascular disease, and the risk of having a stroke. For people who worry about their heart health, krill oil is a great option for preventative care.

Besides the more well-known benefits of heart health, krill oil was also shown to be effective in the reduction of glucose as well. Glucose regulation is critical in the body for healthy insulin response and weight maintenance.

Krill oil can also be used to decrease inflammation in the body. One study done on rats with ulcerative colitis showed a reduction of oxidative markers and preservation of colon length [4]. But the question is still raised, can you get the same effects from fish oil at a lower price due to their similar nature? In the European Journal of Nutrition, one study found that the markers for inflammation reduction were reduced further from krill oil than fish oil [5].

How is Krill Oil Different From Fish Oil? Aren’t They The Same?

Although both fish and krill oil contains the healthy omega-3s, EPA, and DHA, there is one difference. Krill oil’s omegas are linked to another beneficial substance called phospholipids [6]. The polyunsaturated fats in krill oil are bound to phospholipids which allow it immediately be used by the body [7].

The antioxidant in krill oil, called astaxanthin, protects the oil from oxidation that is harmful to the body [3]. Fish oil does not have these added benefits and can often be rancid before they are even taken due to careless packaging and handling by manufacturers. These advantages alone bring krill oil to the top of the list for which supplement to take. When purchasing krill oil, make sure the capsules come in dark bottles to ensure light won’t affect the quality and always store in a cool space to prevent oxidation from heat as well.

Striving to take the best quality of supplements is as important as making sure you’re eating the best quality of food. Research who is sourcing your supplements and their commitment to making sure you’re eating the best. That is why we updated our fish oil supplement to krill oil, to ensure that we are bringing you the absolute best options for your supplements.

Of course, neither krill oil nor fish oil is a replacement for whole foods that contain these beneficial fats, and if you are having trouble fitting them into your diet consider using custom nutrition to help you reach your health goals. And if getting fish and krill regularly into your diet is not an option, then supplementing with a clean and high-quality product like krill oil can help you fill in those gaps. A balanced diet, with the right supplementation, is the key to feeling your best, looking your best, and being your best every day.

*Those who take heart medication or other blood thinners should consult their doctors before starting any fish or krill oil to prevent any adverse reactions when combined. Always refer to a physician before beginning a new supplement.

This Soup is a Powerful Health Food

During the winter you see people everywhere touting the effects of chicken soup. The first thing people say when I feel under the weather is “lay down and have some hot chicken soup.” This first piece of advice is amazing because resting does your body good. The second piece might have been true once, but probably not so much today.

In this post, you’ll learn…

  • When chicken soup was a powerful health food
  • How bone broth is made
  • Top benefits of bone broth
  • A tasty chicken soup recipe for your health

So when was the chicken soup a powerful health food?

The last time broth most likely had real healing properties was when your Grandma was still making it from scratch. And for some of us that could have been our great or great, great Grandma. So what’s changed so much since then?

We start with the heart of the soup itself… the chicken (well at least the carcass)!

Before the time of the electric can opener and the isle full of Campbell’s chicken soup cans, there was a soup made from scratch. Or should I say scrap? Before the time of chicken stock that could be bought off the shelf at the grocery store, the base of the soup was made at home from scraps left over from the animal carcass, and discarded vegetable ends. It was then boiled and simmered down for hours and, eventually, pieces of chicken and chopped veggies were added to this amazing broth.

How is this broth made?

It’s the health benefits of the broth and not the chicken soup that we want to dive into. Our ancestors were able to utilize the whole animal by cooking down the parts that were not easily chewed or couldn’t be digested, like the feet, beaks, and bones. By cooking them down, they were able to consume their nutrition in a broth, which is now referred to as Bone Broth [1].

What’s in bone broth [2]:

  • Collagen
  • Glutamine
  • Calcium
  • Sulphur
  • Glycine
  • Proline
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus
  • Glucosamine
  • Sulphate

What are the benefits when I’m sick?

While all these sound fantastic, when used to battle sickness, studies found that it helps to reduce inflammation in the body and when used to treat upper respiratory infection it can reduce symptoms and shorten the time it takes to heal.

Other added benefits of eating this healing bone broth soup while battling a cold are hydration from the broth itself, and the nutrients to help your body heal not only from the broth but also the chicken and vegetables.

Not all broth is created equal.

While there are remarkable benefits of regular bone broth, another addition that is being used is the inclusion of collagen protein. This aids in the recovery of muscle and joint tissue and is often combined with chondroitin in the formula which also aids in rebuilding healthy tissue. This type of protein brings a body healing and recovery component to the already nutritionally powerful supplement.

Not all chicken soups are created equal.

While the thought of preparing your soup from scratch when you’re feeling under the weather might be less than appealing, one thing you want to stay away from is canned, high sodium soups. Instead, one great alternative is to start with a bone broth powder, packed with all the goodness of homemade bone broth, and mix with water to reconstitute. It’s quick, easy, and will have those nutrients inside your body going to work on healing what ails you in no time. For a more hearty substance try our easy Bone Broth-Chicken Soup recipe for the fastest way to have some almost made from scrap soup when you’re feeling under the weather.

Bone Broth-Chicken “so easy you won’t mind making it when your sick” Soup

  • 2 Tbsp Bone broth
  • 8 oz water
  • ½ cup chicken breast and chopped veggies

Warm in a small pot for just a few minutes until veggies and chicken are hot. For a larger portion double all ingredients and warm in the same way.

Bone Broth can be added to just 8 oz of hot water and sipped like a hot cup of tea as well.

Too Busy to Prep? Stay On Track with This

Recently we’ve seen the explosion of subscription services and you can get one for just about anything; wine, pet boxes, makeup, snacks, food… pretty much anything you can think of.

In fact, we are even partnered with one where you can sign up for a subscription service and get 6 bottles of paleo wine every month.

Because the wine subscription was so much fun it got us thinking and wondering about the services that provide food and so we wanted to try one and let you know how it turned out. The one that we went with was Sun Basket, as it promoted healthy meals made with non-GMO and organic ingredients.

And, if you know one thing about us, it’s that we love our food! We had so much fun with our box of food and really enjoyed it that we wanted to share our experience with you.

Not only was getting the box of food fun and the meals delicious, but it was also super simple to sign up and make! Trust me, even if you are not a whiz in the kitchen, you will be just fine and it won’t take long before you are serving up gourmet meals.

How Do I Get Meals Like This?

When you sign up, it gives you a menu you can choose from, such as Chef’s Choice, Vegetarian, Paleo, or Gluten Free. We, of course, went with the Paleo option and then chose our recipes from there.

In no time at all the food was on our doorstep with all the ingredients we would need already measured out. It had absolutely everything that we needed in it, including the detailed instructions that showed us step by step how to use each ingredient and cook the entire meal.

If you are someone that doesn’t like to cook, or you just don’t think you can cook anything more than your “basic” bland food, then this is for you.

I couldn’t believe just how good the meals were! Or just how easy it was to make them. I don’t consider myself the best cook, so when I was able to make meals that looked like they took a lot of work and tasted like they took a lot of work… I was shocked!

I felt like I was eating at an expensive restaurant that was located right in my own dining room.

How DoeMeal Planning Companies Help Me on a Meal Plan?

This is also a great alternative to eating out. Not only do you get to see just what is put into each meal, something that you don’t always know at a restaurant, but you also get restaurant quality food without the restaurant price. Each meal comes in at just under $12 a plate.

And what is great is you can choose whether you are sent a meal for two or four people. You can easily make this into a meal for a special occasion between you and a loved one, or a nice family dinner. And because you know every ingredient that goes into each plate, figuring out the macros is that much easier than a night out.

There are so many different options when you pick out your meals and everything you need is included right in your box that it takes away a lot of the stress you may have of planning an entire dinner or trying to stick to your meal plan while trying to enjoy a nice dinner out.

In fact, this can make is easy to fit right into your Custom Meal Plan. Much easier than trying to guess what is in your expensive restaurant meal or going through their nutrition guide.

So whether you are looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or just keep up your healthy lifestyle, you know just how you can fit this into your meals without sabotaging your goals.

This Supplement is Putting Fat, Stress, and Inflammation to Sleep

People always ask me what supplements and vitamins I take throughout my day to keep my body in top shape and to make sure that I stay healthy.

Whether you are someone that trains hard like me, or you are just looking to maintain that healthy lifestyle, supplementation can make all the difference in how you recover and how your body functions day-to-day.

Zinc and Magnesium are something I take every day, and one of the biggest reasons that I do is to help me sleep. Because I have such a hard time falling asleep at night and staying asleep, it has become one of my most essential supplements.

Not to mention these minerals are essential to your body’s needs.

Although deficiency in these two minerals is uncommon, it may be recommended to supplement for nutritional reasons, as well as to help treat and prevent certain medical conditions.

Zinc and Magnesium are both used for different things within the body.

Magnesium is vital to the function of your organs, including your heart, kidneys, muscles, and bones. It can be found in a wide variety of foods, such as leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, potatoes, and chocolate. Deficiency in this mineral is usually due to medical conditions like viruses and digestive diseases. It can also be caused by excessive consumption of coffee, alcohol, soda, salt, and stress.

Zinc, on the other hand, can be found in foods such as red meats, poultry, whole grains, dairy, and beans. This mineral is used for growth and development. It is also vital to the health and function of your immune system and overall healing of your body. Deficiency in Zinc is caused by poor nutrition and over-consumption of alcohol.

Although most of us may not be deficient in Magnesium and Zinc, supplementing with it can be beneficial and help aid your body in functioning optimally.

  1. Better Immune System – Studies show that zinc is crucial to our immune system. Not having enough Zinc in our system can make you more susceptible to infection, especially as you age. Supplementing with Zinc can restore your immune response within 2 months and can reduce the incidence of infection (1).
  2. Increased Testosterone – Supplementing with Zinc can help raise your testosterone levels, especially in males who are deficient and are producing less than they should (2, 3).
  3. Reduces Cramps – Taking magnesium can be beneficial if you suffer from nocturnal leg cramps. It can also help to reduce cramps in women who are pregnant (4).
  4. Improves Inflammatory Stress – Research suggests that people who suffer from chronic inflammatory stress can find some relief by increasing their intake of magnesium, especially those over the age of 51 (5).
  5. Reduced Cortisol Levels – A study published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition shows that an increased intake of magnesium can help reduce overall cortisol levels (6).
  6. Performance Enhancement – Magnesium can increase your performance by increasing glucose availability in the blood, muscle, and brain (7).
  7. Faster Recovery – Taking a magnesium supplement can help you get a better night’s sleep, especially for those who are suffering from insomnia by improving sleep time, early awakening, and sleep efficiency. Because sleep is connected to better and faster recovery, supplementing with magnesium can lead to faster recovery time (8, 9).

⚡ Related: Learn how sleep can affect your fat loss efforts!

There are many different reasons why you should include a Zinc and Magnesium supplement into your daily routine, whether you are looking for an edge in your performance and recovery, better sleep, or a better immune system.

When searching for a Zinc and Magnesium Supplement, you will often find them combined together in a ZMA supplement. ZMA stands for Zinc Monomethionine Aspartate, Magnesium Aspartate, and Vitamin B6 and is often advertised as a recovery or sleep aid that is used by athletes and bodybuilders.

If you don’t want to take a supplement and want to make sure that you are reaching the recommended daily dose of Magnesium and Zinc, getting on a Custom Meal Plan can help make sure you are eating a nutritious diet that is sufficient in these vital minerals.

Our Custom Meal Plans are made for your body and your goals, using the foods you like to eat. These meal plans can also help to make sure you are naturally getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

Even if you are eating all the foods that you should be to get enough Zinc and Magnesium into your system, or taking a ZMA supplement, if your gut isn’t healthy, it could lead to your body not absorbing enough nutrients from the food you are consuming and thus lead to a deficiency. Taking a supplement like X-Cell can help you with nutrient absorption and make sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs from the foods you are eating by helping to repair your gut lining. Supplements, and the food you eat are much more beneficial when you are able to absorb all the possible nutrients.
