People always ask me what supplements and vitamins I take throughout my day to keep my body in top shape and to make sure that I stay healthy.

Zinc, on the other hand, can be found in foods such as red meats, poultry, whole grains, dairy, and beans. This mineral is used for growth and development. It is also vital to the health and function of your immune system and overall healing of your body. Deficiency in Zinc is caused by poor nutrition and over-consumption of alcohol.

Although most of us may not be deficient in Magnesium and Zinc, supplementing with it can be beneficial and help aid your body in functioning optimally.

  3. Follow the Plan: What could be more important than making a plan? Following a plan! You can make all the plans you want, but if you don’t follow through, it all begins to unravel. Do your best to stay dedicated to the plans that you have set in place.

Ok, I Signed Up… Not What?

It is not necessary to take your measurements, but I encourage you to. This is because the more you know about how your body is changing, the more rewarding it is. This is the real test on how you are doing throughout the challenge, not what the scale says.

Here are some things to remember to do (and not do) throughout the challenge to track your results:

  • Stay Off the Scale: Often, the scale can be deceiving. While you are doing the challenge, you will be burning fat, but you will also be workout out. This means that you will gain some lean mass. Muscle always weighs more than fat. So, this means that you could weigh more or the same, but look completely different because you burned fat and gained muscle. The scale is not a good indicator of your results. It has no idea about fat to mass ratio and so can be incredibly misleading.
  • Measure Your Progress Other Ways: The real way you should track your progress is with your measurements. This is why I encourage you to get a loose tape measure and measure your waist (around the belly button), thighs, and arms (around the bicep).
  • Take Your Measurement First Thing: You want to keep a steady record of your measurements, but I would recommend you don’t do them every day. Pick a day, once a week. Take your measurements first thing in the morning before you consume anything, on the same day of every week. This will give you numbers so you can see where you are heading and what is changing.

Tip to Start Planning Our Your Meals:

If you know me, you know my favorite carb is the sweet potato. In fact, I love it so much I wrote an entire book about it, which will be out later this year, called The Sweet Potato Diet. I encourage you to eat as much of them as you can throughout this challenge… well, as much as you can while sticking to the 21 Day Metabolic Reset Guide and your meals afterward. The sweet potato is insane for fat loss!!!

And the Biggest Tip of All!

The biggest tip that I can give you for the upcoming challenge is to be aware.

Be aware of what your goals are and what you really want for your life. Don’t be at the end of just another year, asking yourself the same questions.

How to Make Easy Probiotic Tonics at Home

Every grocery store is touting shiny new bottles of fermented drinks now. It seems like there are new brands popping up everywhere. This is great because probiotics in fermented foods are so good for your health. In fact, probiotics help your body in so many ways, it’s important to incorporate them into your diet.

But with these convenient grab-and-go bottles comes the grab and go prices. If you have wanted to get these drinks, but cringe at spending tons of money on them, then you might just want to make a probiotic drink for yourself from home! You don’t have to spend a ton of money for a bottle that won’t last you longer than one car ride.

Making your own is a fun, hands-on way, of getting in touch with your health. Plus, you can see just what goes into these drinks and change them to your liking. Here are two fun recipes for you to try at home. The first one is homemade fermented orange juice, perfect for any breakfast.

Homemade Fermented OJfermented-orange-juice

  1. Orange Juice, fresh squeezed (from actual oranges – no juice)
  2. 1/2 tsp Culture Starter
  3. Filtered water
  4. Sea Salt

Instructions:

  1. Use a 1-quart mason jar for the fermenting process.
  2. Add around 2 1/2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice.
  3. Mix in 1/2 tsp culture starter and just a pinch of salt.
  4. Fill with approximately 1 cup room temperature filtered water, until there is just 1 inch or so of headspace from the top of the jar.
  5. Cover this tightly and then shake before setting it aside in a room temperature place for about 48 hours. (Sometimes depending on your house, fermentation can happen in as little as 24 hours.)
  6. Put in the refrigerator and let chill. Then enjoy your drink.
  7. Slowly open containers because gasses build up as foods ferment.

These ingredients can all be found at your grocery store. The second recipe can be made on a hot day and enjoyed with friends because we just took refreshing lemonade to a whole new level.

Homemade Probiotic Lemon/Limeade

  2. 1/2 C maple syrup/honey
  3. 1 serving of stevia
  4. 1.5 C strawberries
  5. 1.5 C fresh lime juice (about 10-12 limes)
  6. 4 C unflavored kombucha

Instructions:

  1. Bring your water, berries, and sweetener to pan to simmer and cook until soft (about 10 minutes).
  2. While your berries cook, squeeze limes and limes to make juice.
  3. Once soft, blend berries in a small food processor until liquid.
  4. Add lime juice and berries together and place in the refrigerator until cool. Add kombucha right before you’re ready to consume or serve your refreshing drink. You can always add more stevia if it is too tart.

This recipe is so delicious and you can buy a big bottle of the kombucha which is always cheaper than that smaller take and go bottles. This recipe is perfect for multiple servings or sharing with friends.

Don’t be intimidated by making your own fermented, probiotic-rich drinks. People have been making fermented foods at home for centuries. And now you can make your own with just a few simple ingredients.

Taking care of your gut is important, and a full-time job. The foods you eat greatly affect your digestive health. That’s why fermented foods are so important to incorporate into your diet. In fact, these types of foods help your body stay healthy enough to absorb other foods and supplements you consume. 5 Move-Metabolic Shoulder Workout

Today I want to share with you a 5 Move-Metabolic Shoulder Workout using only dumbbells, but I also want to share with my pre-workout routine to get carbs in before killing it in the gym.

In order push yourself, go further and complete the best workout that you can, you need to be sure that your body is fully prepared with enough energy to keep you going the whole time. In order to do that, you need to be able to plan out a routine.

Because I want to be able to perform at my best, I start by eating a complete and balanced meal an hour before I plan on going to the gym.

Then, about 20 minutes before actually going to the gym, I eat some rice cakes and drink some beet juice. What this beet juice does is increase the oxygen uptake in your blood and giving you more energy for your workout. You don’t need too much and I normally only drink about 4-6 oz.

Once I am done with my rice cakes and beet juice, I prepare a shaker with about 20 oz of water, 1.5 scoops of BCAAs and a scoop of nnnSPORT®X-Cell.

Post workout, carbs are a MUST! No matter who you are. How many you should consume depends on the duration of your training, the intensity of your training and what your goals are.

Carbs post workout are necessary as they speed up recovery, push nutrients into the muscles, and they restore your glycogen levels [1, 2, 3].

  1. 8oz of Almond Milk
  2. 1/2 cup of Frozen Blueberries
  3. 1/2 a Banana
  4. 2/3 cup of Quinoa
  5. 2-3 scoops of Organic Vegan Protein Superfood

Blend all of your ingredients in a blender and enjoy!

Gut Healing Power Smoothie

2 cup distilled or purified water

1” piece of ginger (peeled)

1 small handful of mint

1 apple chopped

2 oz of goji berries

Add all ingredients into a blender. Blend on high for 1 minute or until all ingredients are smooth. Your Gut Controls Your Weight – How to Heal It

Keeping up a healthy gut is important, both to your overall health, as well as to your weight loss goals. When your gut is not healthy, there can be some major consequences, such as digestive issues, like leaky gut syndrome. It can even help to influence obesity and make the fight against fat even harder.

You see, your gut is made up of hundreds of different microorganisms, most of which are good for you, as they produce key nutrients, such as vitamin K and B vitamins.

These microorganisms also play a large part in how you break down the foods you eat, especially things you can’t directly digest, like fiber [1].

Most of the microorganisms that are found in your gut are bacteria, with the two main groups being Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. There have been several studies over the years that show a difference in the bacteria that is found in the gut of those who are healthy and those who are overweight or obese. What these studies found was that people who are lean tend to have a much wider variety of Bacteroidetes than those who are obese. Bacteroidetes specialize in breaking down bulky plant starches and fibers. This allows the body to be able to use this for energy. People who are obese, on the other hand, tend to have more Firmicutes and fewer Bacteroidetes than people who are a healthy weight [2].

When trying to balance your gut, the ideal ratio of bacteria you want is 80% good bacteria and 20% bad. Overall, we have a total of 4 pounds of bacteria that reside in our gut.

Balancing your gut with the right types of microorganisms begins with your diet, which shouldn’t be surprising. We know that eating a healthy diet is essential to our overall health and it is no different when it comes to the health of our gut.
